Lidl, the national discount foodstore chain has been granted planning permission to build a new store at Stukeley Road, Huntingdon. This follows a successful planning appeal following an initial refusal of planning permission by Huntingdonshire District Council earlier in the year.

The planning appeal will allow Lidl to proceed with its 14,000 sq ft store on the site of the former Alda Motors garage and the adjoining site to the north, which was formerly home to a nursery and florist business.

Barford + Co, the St Neots based property consultants were involved in brokering the deal between the landowners and Lidl and the company regards this as a further boost to Huntingdon’s retail landscape. Commenting on behalf of Barford + Co, Director Phil Halmshaw stated “With the Huntingdon town centre redevelopment ready to commence, and the Sainsburys move to George Street likely to come to fruition in 2014, this appeal decision will further enhance the range of retailing options which will be on offer in Huntingdon”.

Barford + Co believe that the development of this store will fill a void which presently exists in Huntingdon. “There are very few towns which do not boast at least one of the food discount operators, but to date, the planning authority has resisted retailer applications which lie outside the town centre” continued Mr Halmshaw. “This site is however on the edge of town and the Planning Inspector recognised this fact, saw no problem with the development of a store here and took the view that it would not materially affect the vitality and viability of the existing town centre retail area. Unfortunately, the real damage to our town centres was done a long, long time ago. However Huntingdon, St Neots and St Ives all remain relatively strong retail centres compared with other similar towns across the Country”.

Work on the new Lidl store is likely to commence in the early part of 2014 with the store likely to be open by next Christmas.

Rob Beaumont, Development Director at Lidl said he was pleased that the appeal had been successful. “We have been seeking to develop a store in Huntingdon for over 10 years. We have finally managed to achieve our objective and are delighted with this outcome”.
