Following a highly successful year in 2012, where a record number of planning permissions were secured, Barford + Co has strengthened its planning team with the appointment of William Allwood MRTPI as Associate Planner.

William has over 25 years of planning experience working in both the public and private sectors of the profession. During that time he has worked in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Northamptonshire, and has been involved in the promotion of small and large scale schemes, involving housing, commercial, agricultural and leisure development proposals. Recently, he has acted as project manager for a planning application for a mixed use sustainable urban extension to north of Huntingdon incorporating over 1000 dwellings.

William is a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and is also a Planning Aid Volunteer.

Based in St Neots, Barford + Co deals with planning matters across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire and into the adjoining counties of Northamptonshire and Hertfordshire. Some of Barford + Co’s recent planning successes include:


  • Obtaining planning permission for development of 14 town houses in St Ives town centre;
  • Negotiating with Central Beds Council for the development of 75 houses on a former industrial site in Sandy;
  • Securing consent for the development of 83 upmarket houses with access road and open space on the former Poultry Research site at Houghton Grange, St. Ives;
  • At Wyboston Lakes, near St Neots, obtaining approval for a Continuing Care Retirement Village with 159 care apartments and with a further 51 care bedrooms based around a ‘hub’ providing a range of facilities, such as café, shop, hairdressing and beauty salon and restaurant;
  • Winning a planning appeal for a 81 bed care home at Phoenix Business Park south of St Neots following the refusal of the initial planning application for a 60 bed care home;
  • Securing the issue of planning permission for a major mixed use development of an 11 acre site with 83 houses, business premises and open space in Gamlingay which included the negotiation of a complex S106 Agreement;

In addition to handling planning applications, Barfords planning team has been actively promoting new development opportunities for land owners throughout Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. At Potton, the allocation of land for a mixed used development of 150 houses, employment development and open space with a site for a community hall was secured in 2012. Following an exercise of public engagement managed by Barford + Co, the Council has now approved a development brief for the site in November last year and an outline application is to be submitted imminently.
