The proposed new Sainsburys store at George Street, Huntingdon, and the redevelopment of Chequers Court and St Germain Walk areas of the Town Centre have moved a step closer with the formal approval by the Government of a new road which will link George Street and Ermine Street.

The approval paves the way for the relocation by Sainsburys to George Street. This in turn will free up its existing town centre store which forms part of the scheme for the expansion and improvement of the St Germain Walk area. Alongside the Sainsburys scheme, Churchmanor Estates is pressing ahead with its retail proposals for Chequers Court together with Huntingdonshire District Council’s plans for a new multi-storey car park. All are now expected to move forward as a result of this decision to allow the link road.

This is an exciting time for Huntingdon town centre commented Phil Halmshaw of Barford + Co, the St Neots based Commercial Property Consultants. “There is still some water to go under the bridge, but the approval by the Secretary of State for the link road is a major step forward” he continued.

Barford + Co is property adviser to RECO, the agricultural engineering company and owner of the site on which the new Sainsburys store is to be built. Barfords negotiated the conditional contract with Sainsburys on behalf of RECO and the company continues to advise RECO in relation to ongoing planning and development matters.
