ST NEOTS MAN OPENS COMMUNITY BOXING GYM WITH LIFE SAVINGS

Kevin Bullus from St Neots has used all his life savings to open a community boxing gym in his hometown. Kevin, who works at Little Barford power station, runs the gym with wife Joanna and son Jordan and was an amateur boxer for 20 years.

The gym was formerly an industrial unit on Little End Road and was let to Kevin by Barford + Co, the St Neots based firm of Chartered Surveyors and Planning Consultants. The gym was subsequently granted a change of use permission allowing Kevin to transform it into the home of New Saints Boxing Club.

Kevin, who is a boxing coach as well as having a full time job, decided to plough all his savings into opening the club to inspire the next generation of amateur boxers and provide a safe place for children and adults to enjoy the benefits of a sport like boxing.

Open since October, the gym runs evening and weekend classes for both general fitness and amateur boxing training and there is also a dedicated ladies evening.

Kevin, Joanna and Jordan all have full time jobs and run the gym in their spare time. Commenting on the family’s new endeavour, Kevin said: “The gym is a real labour of love. You could say l went through a mid life crisis and l just felt as though this was something l had to do. My wife and son have been a great support and we run New Saints as a family; even though it’s hard work l wouldn’t have it any other way.

“My son Jordan is himself an amateur boxer and coach and we both love working with new talent and training them to compete on the amateur circuit. The club is affiliated with the British Amateur Boxing Association so our boxers can be confident we are doing everything properly, plus boxing is a fantastic fitness activity with significant benefits including weight loss, muscle building and definition, and overall wellbeing.”

Howard Westgate is Associate Director at Barford + Co, which marketed the property on Little End Road. He said: “It’s great to see this former industrial unit being used for an initiative that will benefit the local community. Kevin is an inspiration to us all and we wish him and his family every success with New Saints Boxing Club.”

The Bullus family runs New Saints Boxing Club completely voluntarily with all profits invested straight back into the club. To find out more about the club and its classes, visit www.newsaintsabc.co.uk or email info@newsaintsabc.co.uk.
